I had a meeting today. The people were very nice, and I am hopeful I was able to convey the vision and intentions of SWITCH clearly. I gave myself some time to reflect and then decided to celebrate with ice cream. Waiting in line, a song I haven't listened to in a long time came on. Their Spotify must have been on shuffle. Keep in mind, the shop was full of children.
Now, there's a lot about the message of this song that I disagree with. The male singer says he would, "Get up on his feet, stop making tired excuses, because if his mother could do it, she can do it."
Sir.
The.
Audacity.
Did he ever stop to think, for a second, that maybe the economy was much better when his mother was facing her struggle? Did he ever stop to think that the stripper might have some debilitating neurological disorder that prevents her from seeking other employment? Did he ever stop to think that there is NOTHING wrong with stripping in the first place?
... Probably not. Whole lot of judgement from that man. I don't condone that for a second.
The woman in the song says, "What would you do if your son was at home crying all alone on the bedroom floor cause he's hungry, and the only way to feed him is to sleep with a man for a little bit of money."
Ma'am.
Lets.
Think.
About.
That.
For.
A.
Second.
If your current means of capital gain isn't resulting in enough for adequate childcare and food, maybe it is time to consider plan B?
This, my friends, is where SWITCH comes in! We are not here to preach or indoctrinate anyone. We are simply here to offer options to those who would like them.
It's funny how the "forces that be" sometimes play a song at exactly the right time or place the right person in your path.
